Bits & Brilliance – playful, memorable, and highlights creativity in technology

What is this project about?

Our project, Junior STEM Coding with BBC micro:bits, aims to bring hands-on technology, coding, and creative problem-solving to all junior classes (Grades 1–6) at North Perth Westfield Elementary School. Using BBC micro:bits from Robotix Education, students will explore computational thinking, design challenges, and collaborative coding activities, giving every child equitable access to cutting-edge STEM learning.

Through this project, students will not only build digital literacy and technical skills but also engage in community-connected learning—sharing projects with families, collaborating with local organizations, and contributing to school-wide events that celebrate innovation. By providing all junior students with their own micro:bit kits, we aim to foster curiosity, creativity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning while strengthening the school’s connection to the broader North Perth community.

Scope & Reach: This project will directly engage approximately 300 junior students annually, supporting inclusive, hands-on, and collaborative learning experiences that empower students from all backgrounds.

Why is this project important to the community?

This project is important to the North Perth community because it ensures equitable access to innovative STEM learning for all junior students, regardless of background or prior experience. By providing hands-on coding and problem-solving opportunities, we are equipping young learners with skills that are increasingly essential in our digital world.

Beyond the classroom, the project strengthens community connections: students can share their projects with families, collaborate with local organizations, and showcase their creativity at school and community events. This fosters a culture of learning, innovation, and collaboration that benefits not only students, but also families, local organizations, and the wider North Perth community.

In short, the initiative promotes accessibility, inclusion, and future-ready skills, empowering students to contribute meaningfully to their community both now and in the years ahead.
