An Active Play Room in Wellington (Branch Library)

What is this project about?

This project will add a flexible active play room to the Wellington Branch Library through creative repurposing of existing space. This will allow for gross motor (physical) play at the library.

Why is this project important to the community?

The Wellington Branch of the County of Prince Edward Public Library is the second-largest library branch in the County. Built by Dr. Parry Dorland Saylor as a lasting tribute to his mother, Annie Dorland Saylor, it has served the village faithfully since 1928.
The Wellington Branch welcomes monthly visits from students at CML Snider school as well as families and children with their caregivers. The children’s room at the branch is cozy and welcoming but small.
Our intention is to expand our children’s room into the meeting room, at times when the meeting room is not in use. We would create an active play room, making the library a welcoming and friendly place for children and their adults. This would include gross motor, noisy play that encourages physical literacy and movement.
We know that for many children with learning difficulties, having the opportunity to move and expend energy before sitting to read is a helpful strategy. Our Picton Branch has a highly popular gross motor space and we have seen an incredible increase in program attendance and library use since its creation.

This project will allow us to creatively adapt existing space to create a room for learning, growing, and moving.
