A Gathering Place: Renewing the Heart of the Community

What is this project about?

The Wiarton Propeller has always been a place where people come together — to learn, to share, to feel connected, and to know they belong. Our community kitchen is our centre. It’s where seniors gather for Lunch & Learn programs, where volunteers prepare food for workshops and events, and where neighbours find comfort in sharing meals and friendly conversation. The kitchen is more than a room; it is a living part of our community’s social fabric.
Over the past year, we’ve seen a growing number of seniors, and community members relying on this space. They come for nourishment, but they stay for social connection — the feeling of being part of something meaningful. As our programming expands, the kitchen has become a vital hub for reducing isolation and strengthening community ties.
To continue serving our community safely and sustainably, the kitchen now needs essential upgrades. Aging infrastructure, limited ventilation, and outdated equipment are creating barriers that restrict how we can use the space and how many people we can welcome. These improvements are not cosmetic; they are necessary to ensure the kitchen remains as a certified space, is accessible, energy efficient, as well as capable of supporting the growing needs of seniors and residents who depend on it.
With support from L.E.A.F., we can transform this well loved kitchen into a resilient, environmentally responsible space that will serve our community. L.E.A.F.’s commitment to strengthening local infrastructure and fostering community well being aligns with our mission: a kitchen that continues to feed bodies, minds, and relationships — and a place where everyone feels they belong.
The Wiarton Propeller Club's Community Kitchen is a hub that strengthens social connection, supports food security, and builds community resilience. With L.E.A.F.’s support, we can complete essential upgrades that ensures this kitchen remains safe, accessible, and environmentally responsible for years to come.

Why is this project important to the community?

For our community, the Wiarton Propeller’s kitchen is a place where people feel welcomed, supported, and connected. It is where seniors gather to share meals and stories, where volunteers find purpose in preparing food for others, and where neighbours come together to learn, where families celebrate life events ( weddings, birthdays, celebrations of life) and build relationships. The kitchen is woven into the rhythm of community life — a space that nourishes not only bodies, but also belonging, confidence, and connection.
In a rural community where isolation is a real challenge, our programs help people stay connected to one another and to the wider community.
For our volunteers, the kitchen is a space where their contributions matter.
For our organization, the kitchen is the heart of our programming. It enables us to run our Lunch & Learn series, host community workshops, support local food initiatives, and offer a welcoming environment for gatherings of all kinds. It is the foundation that allows us to grow, adapt, and respond to the needs of seniors and residents. Without a safe, certified, functional, and sustainable kitchen, our ability to serve the community is limited.
The need for this project has become increasingly urgent. Over the past year, our programming has grown significantly, with more seniors attending weekly Lunch & Learn sessions, more community groups using the space, and more volunteers stepping forward to support local food initiatives. This growth is a sign of a thriving community — but it has also exposed the limitations of our aging kitchen.
Ventilation challenges, outdated equipment, and limited capacity are now affecting the comfort and safety of participants. These issues restrict how many people we can welcome, how often we can run programs.
this project becomes more than an upgrade — it becomes a promise to our community that we will continue to provide an accessible, sustainable space where people can come together and feel valued.
