This project will allow for persons with disabilities (PWD) to access the outdoors using adaptive handcycles. These devices are suitable for not only people with mobility impairments, but often work well for persons with congenital limb differences/ amputation, low vision, balance problems, and developmental disabilities.
By having access to a bike for program use, the program would be inclusive to many people, some who may want to try road handcycling or develop into higher performance athletes, but most will be community members who want to handcycle primarily for leisure. This is not only great for physical health, but the community connections created through adaptive cycling can be life-changing. Many PWDs are isolated and struggle to access outdoor spaces. This program will expand the Handcycling Club into a more inclusive club as well as provide opportunities to PWDs in the Waterloo region and beyond to demo this equipment and participate in group rides and events.
