What is the project all about? (This answer will be shared publicly on your project’s page)
This project aims to cultivate learning, resiliency, and growth by connecting students and community members to the land through Indigenous teachings and STEM-based environmental education. Participants will explore how traditional knowledge and modern science intersect to help communities adapt to a changing climate, understand natural hazards, and embrace nature-based solutions that support long-term ecological and community resilience.
The program will take place in natural settings such as conservation areas or in natural areas near schools, providing experiential, hands-on learning that strengthens both cultural awareness and environmental stewardship.
This project provides meaningful opportunities for students and community members to learn from Indigenous educators about traditional practices, such as smudging, fire building and the importance of land acknowledgements. These teachings help deepen respect for Indigenous cultures, highlight the value of oral traditions and reciprocity, and support local efforts towards truth, reconciliation, and relationship-building.
Communities across the region are increasingly affected by flooding, erosion, and extreme weather events. This project will empower learners to understand how natural systems function and how natural infrastructure, like wetlands, forests and greenspaces, can help manage stormwater, reduce risk, and protect communities. Through hands-on, STEM-based investigations, this program will foster problem-solving skills and scientific curiosity that supports future sustainability efforts.
By blending traditional and scientific knowledge, this project creates a unique space for intergenerational learning. Students will gain exposure to real-world STEM applications, such as hydrology, climate science, and engineering design, while also developing empathy, leadership, and teamwork skills that prepare them to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
